Original Question

Summary and Discussion for below details Hi Everyone! I will focus my discussion on the addressing the breast feeding skeptical colleague. Firstly, I think it is unfortunate that women feel guilty and perhaps shamed that they are not breastfeeding. We, as perinatal nurses, should do out best to reduce those negative emotions that come with the decision to formula feed. That being said, breast feeding is better for the infant. If talking to a colleague who wasn’t so sure, I would focus on the facts. There are ingredients in breastmilk that are important for the developing newborn. One of the most compelling arguments in favour of breastfeeding is the immune system advantages. The presence of antibodies, and specifically IgA, is important for the protection of mucous membranes from bacteria, viruses, and parasites (BCIT, 2021). This is one of the main differences that stands out to me as a huge benefit to newborns and can have a lifelong impact on their immune system. I also would mention the fact that there is so much about chronic diseases later in life that we don’t understand. The emerging research about breastmilk and the gut microbiome is fascinating (Uusitupa, 2019) . I would try to emphasize that there is knowledge that is pointing to early development of a proper gut microbiome can have protective effects against diabetes, obesity, and cancer (Uusitupa, 2019). Those are not small feats. Especially with all of those chronic diseases on the rise, this research could be really valuable in diminishing the disease burden in the future. How do you think you’d respond? It is a little bit of a polarizing topic in some circles and I think this can be due to the guilt/shame people feel for formula feeding.
