Original Question
Please read this comment below and say what you think about it. After reading chapter I believe Columbus and the other explores actions is an act of genocide. Even though Columbus and the Spanish explorers had no political, racist, or religious motivation for killing the Indians and Arawak, it has been overlooked that what was done was mass murder. However, Columbus and the Spanish explorers were responsible for the Arawak’s extinction. ” Columbus later wrote: “Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold.” The Arawak fought Spaniards with armor, muskets, swords, and horses as they attempted to form a resistance army. When the Spaniards captured detainees, they were hung or burnt to death. Mass suicides among the Arawak began using cassava poison. To protect them from the Spaniards, infants were slaughtered. Half of Haiti’s 250,000 Indians were killed, mutilated, or committed suicide in just two years. When it became evident that there was no more gold to be found, the Indians were forced to work as slaves on vast estates known as encomienda. They were worked at a furious speed, and countless died as a result. By the year 1515, there were just about 50,000 Indians surviving. There were 500 of them by 1550. According to a 1650 report, there are no descendants of the indigenous Arawak on the island. The decrease of the Indians after Columbus is enough evidence for me to proof acts of genocide all for greed and gold. The decrease of the Indians after Columbus is enough evidence for me to conclude that genocide was committed for the sake of gold. The key thing to remember they are devoid of any forms of business, neither buying nor selling, and rely only on their natural surroundings for survival. They are excessively generous with their things and, in turn, covet their friends’ possessions and want the same level of generosity.
