Briefing Research, EBP, and QI are similar, yet they are not the same. EBP is taking the available evidence to improve outcomes in quality of care. If there is no evidence to answer the question, then research is needed. And EBP takes into account the values of the patient or the system, the best evidence, and your clinician’s expertise to make clinical decisions (Houser, 2018, 12). In contrast, QI aims to improve quality by implementing tests of change (Houser, 2018, 10). Because some of the tools are shared among these processes and the overarching goal is to improve quality or improve outcomes, this adds to the confusion of the differences between these three processes. Question Types Research generates new knowledge; therefore, the research question is very specific to guide the design, process, and conduct of research (see Research Question template in Module 2). There are five different types of PICOT questions; each PICOT question type has a unique written format (see PICOT template in module 2). The QI question is commonly generated from problems in a clinical setting, such as: Why is our fall rate so high? Implementation With a research study, you analyze the results and disseminate the findings. Whereas in a QI project, you implement the change then study it with the outcomes. The most common process to address QI is with rapid change, such as the plan-do-study-act (PDSA), because the results of this change may improve outcomes at the local level.
