Original Question

Effects of kangaroo care on preterm/ low birth weight newborns PICOT question: In low-birth-weight neonates, is kangaroo care more successful than conventional care in reducing neonatal mortality? Issue/ population affected: The neonatal era still accounts for the majority of baby mortality. In 2020, it was estimated that 2.4 million people died in their first 28 days of life ( ). LBW newborns made up about 80% of the total, while preterm infants made up the other two-thirds ( ). Every Newborn Action Plan, developed by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), aims to reduce newborn mortality rate to 12 or fewer deaths per 1,000 live births ( ). P: Low birth weight/ preterm neonates I: skin to skin contact carried by mother immediately after birth C:conventional care O: reducing neonatal mortality T: during hospital stay Method: •Research literature was found using the databases PubMed and CINAHL Plus. •Keywords that were utilized to search included: kangaroo care, skin to skin contact, mortality rate, survival rate, •Inclusion criteria: peer reviewed, full text available, published after 2016 •One randomized controlled study and four systemic review and meta-analysis were reviewed Results: •Kangaroo care was effective in reducing neonatal mortality than conventional care •Studies have shown that kangaroo care can help to improve the infant’s temperature regulation, heart rate, and respiration. •This type of care has also been shown to improve the infant’s cognitive development and reduce the incidence of developmental delays. •In addition, kangaroo care can help to reduce the stress and anxiety of both the parent and the infant. Conclusions: •In the case of low birth weight and preterm neonates, early kangaroo care resulted in a considerable decrease in neonatal mortality. •KC is a low-risk, low-cost technique that has been found to reduce the time of hospitalization in preterm or low birth weight infants. •A review of the data supports the use of KMC in LBW newborns as an alternative to conventional neonatal care, especially in resource-limited situations .•More research is needed to determine the efficacy and safety of early onset continuous KMC in unstabilized LBW newborns, as well as long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes and care costs. Question…..!!! Current standard of care:?? I said •The current standard of care for preterm/LBW infants is conventional care, which typically involves incubators and separation from the parent. •Incubator care is beneficial in the isolation of a fragile infant in acute or unstable condition ( •However, this type of care has been found to be associated with increased stress levels and decreased bonding in both the infant and the parent( ). I think I did it wrong… can you fix for me…? or add more information?
