Original Question

Julie the human relations manager of the organisation has set up a debriefing session which she will facilitate for the organisation in the board room the next day. Julie has encouraged all people directly or indirectly involved with this critical incident to attend the debriefing. Members of the management Committee and staff who may have been directly or indirectly involved in the critical incident are offered the opportunity to talk about their experience with colleagues as soon as practicable, and according to their wishes. Julie conducts the structured debrief to management and staff and offers any staff present independent qualified counselling services. Arvi stands up and shouts out, why would they need counselling? they weren’t here, they didn’t go into the café that morning and leave 10 minutes before the terrorist came in. Julie looks at Ethan who stays very quiet and Julie can see his hands shaking and he looks a bit sweaty. Arvi continues his rant and Julie responds by saying that this incident can affect different people in different ways, that many of the people in the session regularly go to the café and also know some of the hostages. Julie re-emphasise that this is an open discussion and that everyone should be allowed to express their thoughts, feelings and emotional needs. Julie accurately documents the debriefing session and puts in place arrangements for offering independent counselling services by a qualified counselling professional should it be needed in the future. Arvi tells Julie that he needs time off work to settle his nerves and will discuss annual leave dates with her shortly. Ethan tells Julie that he has not been sleeping well since the incident and would he have some flexibility in in his work start and finish times. Julie suggests that Arvi and Ethan show signs of being traumatised from the incident and should seek this counselling service and that their manager is there to support them as much as possible over the next few months. The manager of Arvi and Ethan Team is requested by the organisation to outline monitoring activities that management will undertake over the next 3 months to ensure that Arvi and Ethan’s mental health and wellbeing is being monitored and that plans are put in place to manage any support needs that have been expressed and employee assistance program services that may need referral and access. Over the next few months Arvi has taken a week’s annual leave and has taken at least one personal leave day every week. Other colleagues say that he has been very hostile towards them when they request case management reports and says he will get it done when he is ready. Ethan has recently lost a lot of weight and appears gaunt and tired; he says he is fine that all is good. He appears anxious at meetings and has been shrugging some of his work responsibilities onto others.
