Frank Hastings is a 62 yo man who has had a suspected stroke. He has taken antihypertensive medication for the past 2 years, but on assessment, his wife reports that he often forgets to take it. She also states that his blood pressure was high the last time he saw his GP. His wife reports that Frank complained of a few episodes of dizziness and blurred vision last week before his collapse today when she found him on the floor, unable to get up. He could not move his left arm or leg and could not speak sensibly. His wife called an ambulance. Frank has now been moved to the ward. He cannot respond verbally but can nod his head to indicate ‘yes’ when asked questions. Flaccid paralysis is present in his left arm and leg, with no response noted to touch in those extremities.
