Brian could interpret Kaiden’s misbehavior as “a boy being a boy” and he may not find Kaiden’s behavior as misbehaving. Running and crashing into his surrounding, along with very physical play is behavior that Kaiden has learned over the years. He has not received any information that this type of behavior is not appropriate and will continue the behavior until it is brought to Kaiden’s attention. Brian might have a behavior plan stating it is ok to act like this at home but how behavior needs to be different in school. This could be very confusing for Kaiden because he is only 6-years-old. Having a different set of rules for different environments is too difficult for a young child to understand. Brian may need to work with the school teachers asking for specific behaviors that Kaiden is doing that the school and teachers find to be misbehaving, Brian may not know that physical play is not appropriate if that is how he grew up and his behavior was not addressed while growing up. Brian could place the blame for Kaiden’s behavior on the school because they are not able to soothe him in the way that best fits Kayden. Bear hugs and vigorous back rubs cannot happen in school and alternative soothing methods need to be found. Brian’s behavior plan could include some other methods that Kaiden suggests. Kaiden may tell his dad that time-outs are not his favorite way to be soothed but they do help him to calm down.
