Original Question

What do you like about this dialogue? I like that the procedure was explained to the patient in a way that the patient could understand, information was delivered more in-depth or in a different manner when the patient didn’t fully understand, and the patient was made to feel as though she had total control of the situation. I also like direct eye contact with the patient at eye level with the patient which shows empathy and respect. Many times, doctors or clinicians stand and look down at the patient while talking to them which only seems to place the patient in lesser regard and doesn’t help with the patient’s uneasiness. What would you change about this dialogue? I would explain to the patient what topical anesthetic is and show the patient how it will be applied. Then I will explain to the patient, that once the tissue is numb, I will deliver local anesthesia using a syringe. I will inform the patient that since the tissue will be numb, the insertion of the needle should not cause any discomfort, then the administration of the solution will follow at a slow and comfortable pace that will also be safe. Can you visualize yourself speaking a similar dialogue? Why? or Why not? I can visualize myself speaking in a similar dialogue because the clinician was respectful toward the patient and informed the patient of what was expected. The clinician also made sure that the patient understood the treatment and why it was needed. Everything was discussed in a manner that was comfortable to the patient. My goal when treating and speaking with patients is to always ensure comfort, respect, and understanding. What do you think are some good ways to address patient questions or concerns? While explaining treatment recommendations to a patient, it is good to ask the patient open-ended questions to engage them in the discussion and find out more about how you can help them. At the same time, this will make them feel comfortable in asking questions if they have any. While they speak, I will actively listen to address questions or concerns, and I will make sure to always have educational tools on hand to assist my patient with visual aids.
