Summarize the following article to 250 words count Title: Is your nursing care culturally competent? Problem Introduction: Cultural competency training is an important topic that impacts healthcare practitioner outcomes. In order to provide the best care possible, nurses and healthcare professionals need to have a solid understanding of cultural differences to provide the best possible care to patients. Background: Research has shown that the implementation of cultural competency training increases healthcare practitioners confidence to provide culturally competent care by increasing their awareness. As a result of the pandemic, many healthcare systems have switched to online cultural competence trainings for their employees. However, the research fails to identify which method of cultural competency training is most effective, and rarely seeks to assess practitioners care from the patient perspective. Methodology The methodology used was both quantitative and qualitative. The means of measurement used were five questions using a Likert Scale and one short answer question. The data collected was correlational. The sample population was current practicing nurses (RN, LPN). Pearson’s Correlational Coefficient (r) and N-Vivo were used for data analysis and description. (52 words) Study Participants For this research study there was a total of 57 nurse participants (females = 54; males= 3) with an educational background ranging from LPN to RN, and an age distribution ranging from 22-70 years old. The highest value being 70 and the minimum value being 22, resulting in a mean value of 36.46, a mode of 28, and a range of 48. The distribution of age of the research participants is positively skewed because the mean is greater than the median which is greater than the mode. Results and Conclusions The common theme of our research is that there was a lack of cultural competency training for nurses of all ages, especially in-person interactive training. The implication of this is that nurses may be biased about the care that they are providing. Many participants stated that they agree or strongly agree that they provide culturally competent care to their patients. Despite this, many of them have not received adequate training or training at all, so it is likely that they are unaware of aspects of care that they can improve. Other themes that resulted from qualitative data collection include the notion that cultural training was “required” by work/school and not voluntary. Which implies that the participants’ experiences may not have been genuine, or as engaging as someone who volunteers to be trained. In conclusion, our research may be skewed due to a lack of awareness of what culturally competent care really means. In order to determine more about the impact and effectiveness of cultural competency training in the healthcare environment, more studies will need to be completed. Specifically, with an investigation into programs that use “in-person” training. It may also be beneficial to include patient participation, and compare responses with those of nursing staff, to minimize bias.
