Original Question

Knowing a patient’s worldviews and our worldviews is vital in transferring care and effectively communicating with patients and populations who may not share their own worldviews (Loughlin, 2020). The values used by individuals in making difficult medical decisions can be very personal, with some values being based more broadly on a person’s worldview or philosophy of life (Orr, n.d). As a professional nurse, I put aside my personal views and try not to compare them to my patients’. You do not need to agree with other patients’ beliefs and values any more than you have to agree with their taste in food or music. Prioritizing my patients’ views and opinions during the care delivery is my greatest strength when offering spiritual care to all patients. I do believe, though, that you should show some interest in their worldview because you are the person providing their care for them (Evans, 2020). If a patient were to ask me about my personal worldview, I would decide to disclose the information or not. Other than that, I do not think I have weaknesses associated with dealing with patients with different worldviews than mine. I would not think any less or perform more inferior care to a patient with a different worldview because anyone has the right to have a different opinion, value, or worldview.
