In comparison to the other nurse’s, when it comes to acquired skills, the only common response that I had with the chosen answers was communication. The other answers I chose were trustworthy and positive attitude. I chose these because having great communication makes a unit run more smoothly. Having a leader that you can trust means a multitude of things including confidence in that person, knowing that they will try their best to have the patients as well as the nurse’s best interest at heart. A leader with a positive attitude sets the tone for the entire unit and how that shift will be experienced. A leader who has these qualities, or believes they hold these qualities, I believe if they were curious as to how they could improve these would be constructive criticism. With constructive criticism, as a leader you are able to see how others view you and what, if any, changes need to be made. As stated by the National Library of Medicine (2017), ” More importantly, feedback aims to develop performance to a higher level.” If working with a leader who is not honest, puts staff or patients in harm or affects the patient care or outcomes, then I would pull the leader aside with a colleague, and relay my thoughts and concerns. At the end of the day, whether it’s a leader, doctor, other colleague, etc., our patients should always remain top priority. The importance of nursing leaders being perceived as honest, comes with honesty being the best policy (Laskowski-Jones, 2015). As a leader, I believe the traits of trustworthy, good communication, and positive attitude are the most important to me. As a charge nurse, I try my best to have an open communication so that all of my nurses feel comfortable coming to me with whatever and having confidence that I am going to listen and respond appropriately. Being trustworthy is very important to me because trust is everything. Finally, having a positive attitude sets the tone for the unit. If you have a negative attitude chances are your nursing colleagues will too, especially as a leader.
