To perform a comprehensive assessment with these multi-dimensional tools, some additional questions may need to be added. Therefore, in lieu of these tools, many health care professionals use acronyms (e.g., OPQRSTU, OldCart) as a framework to perform a comprehensive pain assessment. The purpose of these various types of frameworks is to serve as a guide to ensure important dimensions of pain are assessed so that you can determine the type of pain the patient is having, select or recommend appropriate interventions and evaluate the effectiveness of your interventions. Try a couple of the frameworks or multi-dimensional pain assessment/history tools in clinical practice.
