Original Question
Develop a methodology for the research topic below An exploratory study on the management of cardiovascular diseases among the elderly aged 65 to 80 years in developing countries: a Nigeria case study Introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a condition that causes major deaths of adults in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria (Sanchez, et al. 2017). Cardiovascular disease accounts for 17.5 million deaths annually and is responsible for 11% of over 2 million non-communicable disease deaths in Nigeria (WHO, 2019). Over 36 million people die each year from non-communicable diseases, accounting for 63% of global fatalities; this figure includes 14 million persons aged 30 to 70 (Boateng, et al. 2017). Risk factors for cardiovascular diseases include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and rheumatic heart disease. Cardiovascular disease can affect the heart and blood vessels contributing to the build-up of fat deposits inside the arteries (Atherosclerosis) which is also associated with an increased risk of a blood clot. According to research done by Sanchez, et al., (2017), cardiovascular diseases are known to be a major concern for global health causing damage to the arteries which in turn causes the brain, heart, and kidneys to be damaged, risk factors attributed to these diseases are caused by poor lifestyle of individuals such as smoking, lack of physical activities leading to obesity, poor food intake, family history, hypertension, and diabetes. cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have become the leading cause of death, disability and have become prevalent globally, However, noncommunicable diseases-primarily heart diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental health disorders are the number one killers of this generation and have been termed “a silent epidemic.” Peiris, (2015). Frequently, challenges caused by cardiovascular disease in Nigeria has become one of the leading causes of hospital admissions in Nigeria and the world, medical practitioners, researchers, and scientist are working assiduously in other to find a good management solution to this health challenge. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the general population indicates that major factors which may affects morbidity and mortalities of people suffering from heart diseases and some other types of cardiovascular disease (CVD) conditions include deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, stroke, coronary artery diseases (CAD), abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias, aorta disease, Marfan syndrome, congenital heart disease, and a host of other heart conditions. For this research, cardiovascular diseases to be assessed include Stroke, coronary artery disease, and deep vein thrombosis. These diseases contribute the highest burden of cardiovascular disease in the elderly (Lusis, 2000). The primary cause of coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke is due to the occurrence of atherosclerosis, a disease of the large arteries, which has reached epidemic proportion accounting for about 50% of deaths in the elderly aged 65 to 80 years in Nigeria, these are caused by poor management of these chronic heart diseases (Essien, 2014). Elderly aged people in rural communities in Nigeria are most affected by stroke, due to lack of adequate health care facilities, Nigeria is not yet advanced in early detection and awareness which leads to early management, this research will focus on the management methods to be put in place to ensure that these aged people do not die of lack of ignorance. This research work aims to understand factors in play in the management of cardiovascular diseases focusing on the elderly aged 65 to 80 years in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the research will explore the merits and demerits of the different management methods for cardiovascular diseases.
