Original Question
what do you think about this situation “No education about me without me” well captures what most discharge experiences must feel like from a patient’s perspective. Harvey’s experience of being on the receiving end reminds me so much of experiences I have had being on the receiving end of many of my own medical appointments, albeit from less acute illness than Harvey’s. I think of what I hear as broad generally unhelpful advice. I can only imagine how patients like Harvey who have frequent interactions with healthcare institutions must feel! I have not seen very much discharge teaching or patient education in my clinical experiences. The few instances at patient education I have seen and can recall is generally executed in a similar way to the nurse teaching Harvey at the beginning of the article. Upon reflecting on it, it must just be a bad habit nurses develop because no nurse wants to be ineffective. The shared-decision making approach demonstrated at the end of the article was an excellent example of how much more efficient a nurse can be in the time spent teaching patients. Her commitment to assessing his situation better and discussing a plan that is more suitable to his life resulted in such a better use of both of their time that it really brought to my attention how important and powerful these small shifts in how we approach the patients can be. Frequent reminders of that are important for all of us especially as we settle into the routines of our jobs.
