Original Question
Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses are the population of interest at the center of my PICOT question. This research will center around nurses and their use of coping strategies as an intervention to avoid burnout versus nurses who do not implement any coping strategies to avoid burnout. Nurses present an interesting challenge because of the many different considerations that must be made before any research takes place. These challenges include dealing with the anonymity of nurses and patients, and any potential HIPPA violations (Katz, 2017). Nurses have a primary duty to protect the privacy of their patients and their medical information. This presents a hugely problematic issue of the potential to commit a HIPPA violation during the research. Nurses during their day deal with a multitude of workplace stressors and many nurses actively employ coping strategies while on the clock taking care of patients. Nurses often talk things out with their peers and coworkers and must take the necessary steps to protect their patient’s identities and sensitive medical information (Mohamed, 2016). Nurses might also be concerned about maintaining their own anonymity if they are participating in the research study. Maintaining a work-life balance can be difficult at times, especially when complicated by the nurses association with a research study. This potential for the limelight can complicate a nurse’s workplace and personal life, possibly exposing the nurse to unwanted attention. Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses struggle to maintain separate work and home identity. All nurses deserve their right to anonymity and to live their lives in quiet dignity and privacy (Mohamed, 2016).
