Original Question
What would be an appropriate response with reference? According to Will Erstad (2019) “good” nurses have the characteristic of understanding their patients, working as a team, and showing compassion. He then writes a list of what a “good nurse” later in his article. For our discussion this week, I was able to interview five of my non-medical colleagues, with whom most had similar responses when it came to defining what the purpose of nursing was. Most of that group reported that nursing is a job that requires selflessness and the ability to execute care in a safe manner. Others have stated that nursing is a tough job that is all about keeping patients safe and clean. I then went ahead to speak to five of my fellow nursing colleagues, who felt like nursing is defined as a higher sense of purpose. It’s about knowing what you are getting yourself into (situations that are good, bad, ugly, and/or beautiful) and doing it anyway, to save one life at a time. One phrase that stuck out to me during one of the interviews was “dedicating and risking your life in order for others to live theirs.” The phrase within itself spoke volumes. This experiment helped me understand the different types of perceptions that are out there when it comes to the job that we perform daily and the purpose that we serve. Nursing is subjective, for it has multiple definitions that can depend on one’s level of understanding and experience. Nursing to me is defined as waking up every day and choosing life. Not just our own life but choosing to help others and working with them in hopes for them to feel whole again. Nursing is a job full of wonder, creativity, and growth which will be an even more exciting journey once we are able to level up and enhance ourselves with new skills and experiences.
