Original Question

My observations in the area of gathering the necessary data for research findings while on my practicum is that there are series of barrier encountered by health IT professionals while in their attempts to gather data. I observed also that these barriers vary between and among individual as the case may be and depending on the nature of their findings. To begin, on a more general note, these barrier falls under the following broad headings; lack of time, lack of finance, lack of collecting tools and supporting materials, difficulties in understandings methodology of data collection, lack of preparation, lack of clearly defined goals and objectives, negative attitude towards research, unavailability of supervisors, poor supporting infrastructure and poor knowledge of research findings. These factors affect data collection for both primary and secondary purposes In most cases, the researcher lack the required skills, technique and talent because of deficiency in training. Demography, culture, beliefs, language, religion and other social factors also affects data gathering. For example, in some cases, because of culture and beliefs, when collecting primary data for findings, information is not delivered in the right way. I personally observed that, collecting relevant data for installation of an EHR for a private clinic, was not an easy task. This is so because, they were difficulties in generating the necessary finance and at the installation stage, there was shortage of skill manpower as well as supporting infrastructures. Overcoming these barriers required huge investment in both human and material resources. Government needs to intervene in the form of reducing taxes and granting subsidies to private individuals as the case may be. Workshops, conferences, in-services training and constant review of research methodology should be encouraged. There is also the needs to invest in infrastructure most particularly emerging technology. Other area to take note of are periodic review of data collection techniques , constant monitoring and feedback as well as evidence base guidelines. All these are necessary for overcoming barriers in data gathering and findings. READ THE ABOVE. WHAT DO YOU AGREE AND DISAGREE WITH? WHAT DO YOU FIND INTERESTING? WHAT ELSE MIGHT YOU ADD? EXPLAIN.
