I did not grow up in Australia and only came here as a mature 40 something! My first experience was meeting a lady in a rural hospital who spoke Queens English and was very proper, quite bossy, she was also very sick and I realised she was actually very scared. This lady was an Aboriginal elder and a member of the stolen generation. She was very proud and private and I had to take great care to ask permission before I did anything with her. I was quite anxious not to do the wrong thing and cause upset. I was used to people coming to the emergency department wanting to be treated quickly and I just assumed consent because they had walked through the door! Looking back I’m glad that although back then I knew almost nothing about Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture I was brave enough to ask. I think my bias is that I assume that older Indigenous Australians will be ‘stolen’ and that they are expecting the absolute worst treatment from me as a non-Indigenous person.
