Original Question

From a counselor in training perspective, I believe one should be cautious of addressing a MD prescriber because it is out of my realm of expertise. While I may have an opinion on what it is that I feel could be effective in the situation I must also consider that I am not familiar with all sides of the evidence-based research that relates to the client, and therefore I should respect the professional boundaries. Hopefully I have done my research on the prescriber and that is why I have connected my client with them and can now remove myself from the medication side. Additionally, it brings of back to the idea of avoiding liability. The risk of overstepping your professional boundaries to give advice or opinions on medications can open one up to malpractice lawsuits. One thing I feel could be most effective in this situation is sharing what you’ve observed from a counselor standpoint. Clients aren’t always as honest with physicians as they should be so maybe the left something out when describing symptoms. However, when with you they are more open and honest because you have built that rapport. Another effective action could be to ask questions about decisions you don’t understand so that you may receive clarity.
