One of the positive advancements that was made throughout the twentieth century was advancements within medicine. From diseases such as smallpox’s and polio, scientists developed vaccines that controlled the diseases and helped save millions of people. In 1981, the Aids Epidemic broke out which led to many developments within public health. Even though scientists were able to help millions of people with medication throughout the Aids Epidemic, 20 million people still died from the disease because scientists were unable to combat the different threads of the virus. Although the advancements within medicine were not perfect, scientists made a lot of progress when it came to treating diseases. They were able to drastically reduce mortality rates especially when it came to smallpox and the aid epidemic. According to the science and technology chapter within the textbook, the smallpox disease “was eradicated in the twentieth century and polio was almost eliminated” (520). This example shows a positive that came with the development of medicine, but during the AIDS epidemic there were limitations within response to the disease. The epidemic had social stigma and delayed action that resulted in the rise of antibiotic resistance.
