Original Question
Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect, where the spine and spinal cord do not form properly (Mayo, 2023). The neural tube forms in the early stages of pregnancy to form the brain and spinal cord. Spina Bifida happens when the neural tube does not close all the way (Mayo, 2023). There are 3 different types of spina bifida, ranging in severity. The least severe is spina bifida occulta. This is the most common type and results in a small separation between the bones in the spine (Mayo, 2023). The most rare type is meningocele.
