When trying to explain what menopause is to a teen, I would say the following: Menopause is when a woman transitions into an infertile stage. When a woman goes through menopause, periods completely stop for at least twelve consecutive months. During this stage of a woman’s life, some will experience mild to no symptoms while others may experience hot flashes, night sweats or moodiness. Menopause is not an illness it is simply a term that is used to mark when a woman is no longer able to bear children, which happens to every woman as they age (National Institute on Aging, n.d.). The coping strategies for menopause related problems that appeal the most to me are the more holistic approaches. There are many health risks associated with menopause such as osteoporosis, arthritis and elevated blood pressure. To combat this I would make sure to take vitamins, eat nutritious food, and exercise regularly. Taking supplements such as Maca, wild yam and pollen extract have been shown to help with menopausal symptoms after 12 weeks of use (Johnson & Elkins, 2019). In order to set aside the uncomfortable menopausal symptoms, I would also lean into friends and family. Prioritizing family and friends would not help alleviate symptoms but would help navigate and manage symptoms better (Ilankoon, Samarasinghe, & Elgán, 2021).
