Original Question

Nursing student collegue response to the following post in one paragraph. “Dylan Alcott, speaker of the TEDx talk video, The Truth About Growing Up Disabled has enlightened us into to the life of a disabled individual. It is much easier for a person to be born with a disability to be more acceptable of it than for someone who has become of circumstance or a victim of it, because they had their own way of life and now, they have to contemplate with the fact that they have to accept it and live with regret. Mr Alcott showed a picture of himself, made a few jokes and stated” That was the first time in my life I really care about my disability.” Reason being he was now a teenager and he had early struggled of self-image during that period of his life. Some peers would understand and in turn be rude and mean to him. At first his disability was not a problem to him. It was accepting but the more he grew, the more he learned and understood what was going on, but he also learnt to accept the fact that he is disabled, and this is who he is, so he has no other alternative than just accepting it. He makes jokes a lot to mask the inward battles that he has with himself or to highlight the issues so that no one can bully him about it. He is confident and self-assured because he has been through it all and has accepted and learned to love and appreciate himself. He had a pivotal moment when at a friend’s home, he was not able to accommodate him not out of rejection but of accessibility. Instead, of blaming his friend, he took the initiative in helping his friend to embrace his struggles being a disabled and that was when his advocacy for disabled begun.”
