Then, you’ve got other risks, like the damage fire is causing in a structure, which may result in a collapse and cripple or kill you. For vehicle fires, you’re trained to approach from a 45 degree angle, because the struts can heat and explode, blowing out straight or to the side. The thing about fire is though that it’s typically predictable. You can stay further away, watch for changes in signs of changes in fire behavior that indicates needing to evacuate, and you have PPE that will protect you long enough if you can get away. Smoke is the real issue, though. It carries all the burning air and toxic gases that we can’t avoid. Even engineers outside or away from a fire breathe in the smoke. It causes long term changes to our health that we can’t predict or mitigate. It’s impossible, and even unreasonable to expect that everybody can stay on air for the full duration of a fire. My own chief has been a career firefighter his whole life, but has spent the last 10 months on leave because of aggressive brain cancer. He was always telling us to stay on air longer than the fire is out, even through to the end of overhaul and we’re getting back on the trucks, but now it’s an even stricter message. Fire is the risk we can mitigate and avoid better, but smoke is the overall worst because it gets us no matter what.
