Original Question

response to my nursing student classmate. Mental health and culture. three paragraphs. “As a nursing student learning about transcultural nursing, I’ve realized how important it is to acknowledge mental health across all cultures. Every patient bring their own beliefs, values, and lived experiences; these shape how they view mental health. In my own culture, anxiety and depression have long been stigmatized. Talking about these issues was often seen as a sign of weakness, and those who did were judged or dismissed. However, I’m glad to say that I see a shift, especially among the younger generation. There are more open conversations now, and slowly but surely, the stigma is being changed. After watching the video, I was really moved by how people from different backgrounds shared similar struggles. Whether it was the difficulty of translating emotions into words, the fear of judgment from parents or community, or just feeling alone, these experiences crossed cultural lines. For example, one speaker shared that depression was seen as something shameful, and even talking about it could make someone “undateable.” Another talked about how food or art became outlets when words weren’t enough. I related to this personally, I’ve had friends confide in me simply because they knew I wouldn’t judge them. As future nurses, we need to be aware that our patients come from cultures where mental health isn’t openly discussed. Instead of making assumptions, we should create safe, nonjudgmental spaces where people feel heard. Understanding a patient’s cultural lens helps us provide care that is not just clinically sound, but also compassionate. We have a responsibility to listen, support, and advocate. Mental health should never be ignored, no matter where someone is from. Everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and safe enough to ask for help. That’s the kind of nurse I hope to be.”
