Reply to your peer’s post below in 100-150 words, include one reference and an in-text citation within the past five years. Hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis are both immune mediated reactions. Hypersensitivity occurs as “an overreaction of your immune system to something that would not usually cause an immune response” (Health Direct, 2024) while anaphylaxis “is an acute, life-threatening hypersensitivity disorder defined as a generalized, rapidly evolving, multi-systemic allergic reaction” (McLendon & Sternard, 2023). Many people experience allergy symptoms throughout the year such as a runny nose, cough, congestion, itchy eyes, inflammation, etc. which are the product of a hypersensitivity reaction in the body. These symptoms can be extreme and irritating, but are not usually life-threatening with proper treatment. Anaphylactic reactions on the other hand are life threatening. Common symptoms include skin reactions, hypotension, constriction of the airways, a swollen tongue or throat, a weak/rapid pulse, nausea/vomiting and dizziness/fainting (Mayo Clinic, 2025). Anaphylactic reactions require immediate intervention. As a nurse treating a patient experiencing an anaphylactic reaction it is important to be able to identify the condition and be familiar with the expected treatments. Important interventions include airway management, decontamination, administration of intramuscular epinephrine, IV fluid resuscitation and the use of adjunctive therapies as needed (McLendon & Sternard, 2023). Once the patient is stable, an important consideration is the cause of the reaction. Was the exposure a pre-identified allergen or was it an unknown source?
