Hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis are serious medical conditions that require immediate recognition and management. Hypersensitivity reactions can manifest in many ways, such as rash, itching or difficulty breathing. Anaphylaxis is a more severe reaction, marked by symptoms such as throat swelling, rapid heartbeat and a sudden drop in blood pressure (Pflipsen & Colon, 2020). Understanding these symptoms is crucial for health professionals, especially nurses, who play a vital role in patient care. Nurses should differentiate anaphylaxis from other conditions, such as asthma attacks or cardiac problems. Although asthma may have respiratory difficulties, it usually does not have the rapid beginning of serious symptoms associated with anaphylaxis, such as hives or gastrointestinal suffering (Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis, 2021). Recognition of these differences helps to provide the correct treatment, essential for patient safety. In cases of suspicion of anaphylaxis, immediate action is critical. First, the nurse should request emergency care, ensuring the patient’s safety and position. Epinephrine administration is often the first line treatment to combat severe allergic response (Pflipsen & Colon, 2020). After that, monitoring vital signs and keeping the patient’s calm are essential steps to manage the situation until more helps it reaches. Overall, a solid understanding of hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis can greatly improve a nurse’s ability to provide effective care and respond to emergencies quickly (Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis, 2021).
