This happens when the body responds improperly to an infection, leading to tissue damage, organ failure and death. This is a life-threatening medical emergency and is often caused by an infection in the lungs, stomach, skin kidneys or bladder. Severe cases of sepsis can lead to septic shock, where your blood pressure drops to a dangerous level and multiple organs can fail (Sepsis, 2023). Some pathophysiological changes include systematic inflammation, endothelial damage, and coagulopathy. Systemic inflammation is caused by the immune system overaction to the infection. Endothelial dysfunction happens when the blood vessel lining dilates, dropping the blood pressure and restricting the blood flow to the organs. Coagulopathy happens when sepsis harms the clotting factor process in the body, leading to bleeding and possible disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Sepsis symptoms include fever, elevated heart rate and breathing, confusing, low blood pressure, pain, sweating and shortness of breath. Some abnormal test finding includes platelet count (CBC), coagulation studies (PT, aPTT, and D-dimer), liver and kidney function test and white blood cells count (WBC). Sepsis is a medical emergency, and patients should receive medical intervention immediately to avoid multiple organ dysfunction. Treatment includes antibiotic therapy, fluids treatment and organ support if septic shock develops. This stage of treatment requires a personalized therapeutic approach, including specific organic support, mechanical ventilation, continuous hemofiltration, blood product supply, and nutritional support (Nordic, 2024). Sepsis can cause patients physical, limitations and dependency. Physical weakness and cognitive impairment are common issues that can affect patients’ ability to perform activities of daily living. These limitations should be addressed with physical therapies, occupational therapies, case managers and nurses to help patients gain independence. References Sepsis. (2023, November 13) MedlinePlus.
