BAART is part of the Baymark Health Services organization that provides outpatient treatment to adults diagnosed with opioid use disorder. BAART provides medication for opioid use disorder (i.e., Methadone, Buprenorphine, Naltrexone, and Lofexidine.) In addition to medication, BAART also provides case management, individual therapy, and group therapy. As an intern, I hope to gain additional experience working within the substance abuse field by exploring evidence-based practices. I also want to understand better how to best support this population in their recovery goals and effectively provide therapeutic interventions. Advanced Practice Intern Role My role as an advanced practice intern is to move beyond the brief assessment and case management services and to dive deeper into the development of treatment planning, providing treatment (using evidence-based practices), monitoring progress, and adjusting the treatment plan based on the progress and needs of the client (Walden, 2022). Within the advanced practice role, my expected tasks consist of the following: 1. Intake assessments 2. Completing a biopsychosocial assessment 3. Developing individualized patient-centered treatment plans 4. Facilitate Individual and Group counseling/psychoeducation 5. Monitoring patient progress and adjusting treatment accordingly 6. Address crisis needs and provide interventions 7. Support patients through challenges and setbacks 8. Celebrate recovery milestones and achievements 9. Case Management and Advocacy These tasks differ from the task of a generalist because they build on the generalist task and skill set. As a generalist, my assessments would focus on identifying clients’ needs and connecting them to providers that could provide the clinical services and interventions. As an advanced practice role, I will dive deeper to understand the needs and barriers and provide the interventions (Walden, 2022). For example, as a generalist, I might identify with the patient that they would like help addressing their symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the generalist role, I would connect the patient with a therapist, social worker, or group to help explore their symptoms and treatment options. In the advanced practice role, I will not only help assess the clients’ symptoms but then develop a treatment plan, provide evidence-based interventions and/or skill building, and monitor the client’s progress (Walden, 2022). Finally, I still might help connect the patient with additional resources and services that would be the most appropriate for them.
