Kidney stones occur when “urinary solutes precipitate to form aggregates of crystalline material in the urinary space” (Shastri et al., 2023). There are many different kinds of kidney stones that each have their own physiological explanation, but in general, kidney stones “form when certain substances in the urine turn into crystals” (Informed Health, 2023). These substances are typically present in trace amounts and excreted in the urine, but when they become increasingly concentrated due to disease, nutrition, medication, etc. this process occurs and can cause obstruction in the urinary tract. An individual (such as a 45-year-old male who is at higher risk for development of kidney stones due to his age and gender), may experience symptoms such as flank pain, nausea, vomiting, “blood in your urine, painful urination, and a stronger or more frequent urge to urinate” (Informed Health, 2023). Diagnosing a kidney stone may include imaging studies such as an x-ray or CT scan, but can also include blood/urine tests to determine possible causes. Kidney stones are either passed through urine (often with the help of medications and pain relief), but “Depending on how large the kidney stones are and where they’re located, sound waves can be used to destroy them or they can be removed using endoscopy or a minor surgical procedure” (Informed Health, 2023). If left untreated, kidney stones can have negative impacts. A blockage in the urinary tract may result in impaired kidney function, infection and can even affect the cardiac system. As a nurse caring for a patient diagnosed with a kidney stone (or any other diagnosis), it is important to recognize the patient as a whole and cater to their needs beyond those that are physical. By meeting these needs, nurses enable their patients to flourish, which “entails thriving in all areas of life, encompassing the intellectual, moral, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a person” (Grand Canyon University, 2022).
