This discussion question is informed by the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.h. A general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for differentiated interventions. CLASSMATES POST- Developing an empathetic relationship with a client who has a substance use disorder is essential for building trust and fostering a safe environment for change. Empathy helps reduce shame and resistance, allowing clients to feel understood and supported (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). To challenge behaviors and thoughts that are not recovery-promoting, counselors should use motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral techniques to explore ambivalence and highlight discrepancies between the client’s actions and their goals. This approach encourages insight without judgment. Providing accurate, personalized information about substance use disorders and treatment options empowers clients to make informed decisions. Education should address the biological, psychological, and social aspects of addiction while also introducing evidence-based treatment options such as counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and support groups (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). This combination of empathy, respectful challenge, and education supports the client’s movement toward lasting recovery. Although we all have personal and religious beliefs or bias we have to remain ethical and follow the code of ethics and the GCU Counselor Disposition. According GCU Counselor Disposition the Acceptance Disposition: CITs work to foster a nonjudgmental professional environment while embracing change and others as they are. CITs avoid value imposition, uphold ethical standards, and remain conscious of their own attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors while being sensitive, receptive, and considerate to those of their clients (GCU, 2022).
