This term will be the second of my MPH after having completed an MS in Healthcare Administration earlier this year. I decided that I haven’t had enough punishment, but the reality is that I finally began to enjoy school for the first time, including my initial stint of undergraduate coursework from 2001-06. In that time, I managed to develop a rather horrific drug addiction along with activities that make any background check require a detailed explanation. In the middle of 2024, I gratefully celebrated a decade of continuous sobriety which was undoubtedly one of the more incredible things I’ve ever done. The joint experiences of addiction and recovery enabled me to find some success working in local substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities, the most recent of which was founded, developed, and implemented by myself and three other professionals. Almost eighteen months ago, I had the opportunity to make a change and return to the family businesses of in-home senior care and non-emergency transportation. At present, I have a variety of responsibilities and have been able to leverage my history of formal writing into writing successful proposals for grants and taxpayer funded services. I primarily provide back-end support and administration services for senior leadership, although most of my very early morning is spent taking phone calls from transportation clients and assisting in the dispatch process. When not at work, I can most likely be found at home relaxing with my 3 dogs whose company I prefer to that of almost any people. I also find myself reading a novel or attached to a video game when I’m not at the worktable building Legos. When utilized in the public health sector, microbiology’s critical function is the way it assists researchers and clinicians study the spread and impact of diseases. This has a societal impact of being able to curb or arrests outbreaks before they evolve into endemics or pandemics. These functions exist in stark contrast to microbiology in the medical field, where professionals are largely focused on addressing the treatment and spread of a disease in a single person. The medical field does benefit from the work of microbiologists in public health, as these larger scale studies can then be utilized for the benefit of individual communities or patients. While doing some initial reading on the relationship between microbiology, I came across a professional’s description of working in the field. She explained very well that microbiology in public health is not necessarily focused on why things happen, but what happened so it can be addressed to not happen again (Leung, 2019). That is not to say that the why is unimportant, but more finding the meaning behind an event so that others can step in to collaborate on solutions, while saving the why of an event for later on in order to predict and mitigate future occurrences. For me, I have always loved figuring out the facts behind an event in order to shift the focus from problem to solution. I did it when I entered into recovery, and look forward to continuing.
