Speaker 1 (00:35) Hi, Haley. Nice to see you. How are you feeling today? Speaker 2 (00:42) Just tired. Okay Speaker 1 (01:21) Okay. I’m sorry to hear that your stomach and your head has been hurting and that you feel like you need to be in the nurse’s office. Let’s talk more about that. You said that you’ve been experiencing some headaches and some stomach aches. When is this happening? Speaker 2 (01:39) Usually, my head starts hurting when I wake up on school days. When I get to class, I’m okay, but sometimes she makes me get up to the board and write on the board. I don’t like that. I don’t like answering questions in front of everyone. I usually just want to stay even when I have my headaches or my stomach ache. So usually it’s my head hurting when I’m in class. So to get her not to call me up to the board, I just say, Can I go to the nurse? My head’s hurting because it starts hurting. It’s not like I’m not telling the truth because it does start hurting a little bit. But I just tell her, My head’s hurting and I can’t do this. Can you send me to the nurse? And then when I go to lunch, my stomach usually hurts. I usually go to the caf, and then we stand in line. I get my food, I sit down, I eat. And then after I’m done eating, I throw my food away. And then I just sit there by myself. I don’t have any friends. I just sit there by myself, and my stomach is hurting, my head’s hurting. Speaker 2 (02:54) In the cafeteria, I just ask when the lunch ladies, can they send me to the nurse? Because I don’t really like being there by myself. Last week, I threw up in the cafeteria, and people laughed at me. So that was very embarrassing. I don’t want anyone to see me like that. So I just, I threw up. I don’t know what was wrong with me. I think at that time, it was just a lot going on. In the cafeteria, it was just loud and I’m by myself, no friends, everyone else sitting with each other, and I’m just not sitting with them, with other people. I feel dizzy when I’m in the cafeteria. I feel sick. I feel dizzy even when the teacher asked me to get on the board. I don’t know. I just feel very nervous. I feel very nervous when I’m around a bunch of people, when I’m getting in front of class, when I’m in the cafeteria. I don’t know. It’s just very nervous. Speaker 1 (04:11) Okay. Well, thank you for sharing all of that with me because that’s a lot for you to be feeling all of this anxiety with being at school. That’s tough for an eight-year-old to deal with. It’s tough for a 30-year-old to deal with. So I definitely am sorry to hear that, but I am definitely here to help you because it sounds like even though we are definitely, like you said, having stomach aches and having a need to be excused from class for the stomach aches and the headaches, it sounds like all of this comes down to you not being comfortable. I think there’s something that we can do about that. Is there something that we can maybe do to make you feel more comfortable at school? Speaker 2 (04:59) I don’t know. I feel better when I’m home because I get to watch my shows, I get to lay in bed. I don’t really have siblings who are close My sister, she’s my only sibling, and she’s much older than me. She’s about to graduate high school. So it’s just hard being the only child in my household. And then at school. This is a new school, so I’m just new. Everyone else has already made their friends. They already have their cliques, and I’m just all by myself. I don’t know what it is that I can do to make me feel more comfortable. When I go to the nurse’s office, I tell her my head’s hurting, my stomach hurts. She gives me some water or some milk, and she’ll send me into a little quiet space. She It’s like a little iPad, and I get to watch my shows, and I’m feeling much better when I’m by myself. I don’t really know what can help me at this school. Speaker 1 (06:12) Well, a little earlier, you said something about not having any friends. You mentioned that you’re new here, and it sounds like making friends is something that’s important to you. I know that going into the nurse is definitely a good reset, and that’s a nice nurse I’ll let you watch your shows. So you’re a very lucky girl. But that’s not a permanent solution because it sounds like the real underlying issue here is I’m lonely. I’m lonely at home. My sister is 17, and she’s going I went to high school, and I don’t have any friends at school because I’m new here, and I haven’t really found my people yet. And that’s okay. And that’s something that we can work on together. Speaker 2 (06:54) Yeah. I think not having friends is something that bothers me a lot. Because at my old school, I had a lot of friends. Everyone liked me. I’m just struggling finding a good friend or someone to play with during recess, someone to eat lunch with, someone to talk to when I’m just at home, someone to share TV show jokes with. It’s just hard not having any friends here. Yeah. Speaker 1 (07:28) Okay. Well, like I said, we can definitely work on that. But let’s get down to what you’re doing. So you said that when you get those stomach aches and the teacher excuses you, that you go down to the nurse. And then what happens? She gives you the milk, the water. Is that a permanent solution for your stomach aches? Do you not ever get stomach aches after that, or do they continue? Speaker 2 (07:57) No, they continue the next day. Unless the teacher does not tell me to get on the board, I’m okay. So when she doesn’t call me up to go to the board, I don’t get a headache, I don’t get a stomach ache. But I do always, almost always, have a stomach ache during the cafeteria time. It’s just a lot of people in there, and I don’t have anyone to sit with. I don’t have anyone to talk to. It’s just hard. And then the food isn’t good, so I don’t have anyone to complain about the food, too. It’s just a lot. Speaker 1 (08:38) I’m hearing pressure when we’re getting the stomach ache, it’s when we’re under pressure, when we’re on the board and we’re expected to perform, or when we’re in an overstimulating social setting, like the lunchroom, which can be. There’s a lot going on there. You got friends, You got people talking, you got the lunch ladies, you got the teachers popping in, and then you got the food that you said doesn’t really taste the best. And then I’ve heard from a few friends that the smell in there sometimes can get a little overwhelming. So it’s a sensory overload in there. So I can definitely see why that would be a lot. So what can we do besides the nurse to make lunch and recess more of a time, instead of isolating ourselves, a time to be brave and socialize? Because the nurse is probably not, like you said, a permanent solution. The next day, the stomach aches, come back. The next what we’re doing as far as going to the nurse is not a permanent solution. We just need to establish that. We need to find something that’s going to help. And that’s what we want to do.
