Original Question

UV Light & Vitamin D Vitamin D3 is very important for our bodies. It helps us grow normally, absorb calcium, and develop strong bones and teeth. If someone doesn’t get enough vitamin D, they can develop problems like rickets (which softens the bones), osteoporosis, or even serious health issues. Pregnant women need extra vitamin D because their bodies are making a skeleton for their baby. We can get vitamin D3 from certain foods, like fish liver oil, and our skin can make it when we’re in the sun. When you look at Figure 3 you can see that the amount of sunlight (or UV levels) gets lower as you move away from the equator. This means that people closer to the equator need more sun protection to get enough vitamin D since they will be exposed to more sunlight. Those with dark skin can still make enough vitamin D if they live near the equator. On the other hand, people with light skin can make plenty of vitamin D, especially in places farther from the equator. This means that lighter skin helps people get enough vitamin D in those areas. However, too much sun can cause problems skin cancer, while not getting enough sun can lead to vitamin D deficiencies. Over many years, people living in different climates have adapted to have skin colors that help them get the right amount of UV exposure and the ability to make enough vitamin D for good health.
