I work for a company that oversees 5 universities which the majority of them , train Healthcare providers. From a personal standpoint , I see the relevancy of data science in such an organization focused in higher education in a way that data science helps shapes the trajectory of the organization and allows it to determine Whether or not it’s meeting its objectives which is to ultimately provide a better learning environment. Also, data science allows the organization to assess its health; meaning helping organizations assess whether or not they are operating at their full potential as well as making informed decisions on the operation of the organization. As for the characteristics of Big data, There is Volume, the amount of data generated; Velocity, the speed at which data is generated; Variety, referring to the different types of data that can be categorized as structured or unstructured; Veracity, the truthfulness of data generated, and then Value, which pertains to the benefits extracted from data ( Cognitive Class, 2016). In the area of higher education, Big data can be used to help organizations such as the one I work for to create a personalized learning environment where students would be effectively supported.
