The medial lemniscal pathway carries signals that are related to sensing the position of our limbs and perceiving touch. It has large fibers that carry the signals (Bielek, 2025). The spinothalamic pathway carries information about pain and temperature and is made of smaller fibers. This pathway is also older than the medial lemniscal pathway (Bielek, 2025). When pinching your finger or stubbing your toe, many people have the natural response to swear or put pressure on the injured body part. This is a reaction that actually has some science behind it. Swearing when experiencing pain can lessen the pain a person is experiencing by causing a fight-or-flight response (Brown, 2023). When swearing the amygdala releases adrenaline which elevates the heart rate and leads to a soothing effect (Brown, 2023). Putting pressure or grabbing a wounded body part helps reduce pain by enhancing the brain’s map of the body (Jabr, 2011). Touching a wounded body part helps to send signals to the brain about temperature, spatial position, and identity which helps the brain’s coherence of its body map which reduces pain (Jabr, 2011).
