Original Question
In your response post to a peer offer at least two self-care strategies that could be used to support the health and well-being of the educator in the scenario. April 7th was a tough day, I am in the ABA field and I have a client that is regressing and going to extreme measures for attention. Monday when my client came in she immediately began running away from her therapist and hair pulling. I spent the first 30 minutes of the 4 hours she was there chasing her and helping her therapist. I am the person in charge of her case and for the past 3 months it has been a challenge. On Monday I gathered a bunch of sensory toys and fun crafts to keep her busy, another thing causing stress is due to the increased amount of behaviors and the duration of them; many therapist are requesting to come off her team for health reasons and personal understandable reasons. So Monday I was on a mission to find the item that will motivate her to work and to stay calm. That did not go as planned, I ended getting hit, kicked, hair pulled, and spit at. She was focused and amused by causing discomfort and pain to others around her. The 4 hours she was there she was in constant behaviors, I was the primary person getting the aggression because I am the one who was attempting to de-escalate her. I felt very defeated and at my end, I am newer to the field and I am still learning. She is my most complex case and I am trying to navigate through her behaviors. The defeated feeling comes from having a team who wants to not work with her and feeling like I have tried everything possible (she has had previous people in charge of her case who have come to the same conclusion). I hate the feeling of giving up on someone but I have no idea what to do anymore. Her parents are not supportive in trying or seeking additional support for other barriers beyond what ABA can do. Physically I am tired, emotionally I feel lost, and mentally I want to avoid.
