Original Question

The experience of Doyle Byrnes is an interesting story highlighting the complexity of social media and nursing students’ professional standards. Doyle Brynes took a photo of a placenta in a clinical lab and posted it to their social media account, which resulted in reprimand and removal from the program as well as a judicial proceeding; there was a breakdown in communication and professional standards that perpetuated this experience. My initial reaction was that it was inappropriate for the student to take pictures in a lab setting. Under no circumstances can I see that as appropriate. However, I have empathy for that student as that was ndeemed okay by their clinical instructor; I also feel that the school’s reaction was swift and intense as there were no identifying factors on the photo. I am glad this student could be reinstated into the program as we all know nursing programs’ effort, challenges, and dedication. This conflict could have been avoided by having clear professional boundaries. As nurses, we must keep our social media professional if we choose to have them, and we must consider privatizing the platforms we share to minimize contact with clients and members of the public. Only approximately 37% of health care provider students have their social media platforms set to private (VukuÅ¡ić Rukavina et al., 2021), a staggeringly low number in my opinion. These standards allow us to continue a positive public perception as a profession (Zhu et al., 2020) As a secondary thought, I reflected on how some of my favorite content creators online are medical professionals, physicians and nurses who share their expertise and experience educationally and engagingly while remaining professional and outside their education and employment institutions. These issues around social media are complex, and standards need to be clearly expressed to students and staff to avoid situations like this in the future.
