Original Question
M3.3 discussion: when the patient becomes invisible. Introduction In this discussion, you will examine the process we go through after being given a dire diagnosis. Most of us will want to know exactly what to expect and how long we will have to suffer. There is the process of living day to day with discomfort or serious pain. When we are ill with a disease it is often the case that being sick and attempting to get better becomes all-encompassing and the focus of our lives as well as that of our caregivers. Who we are as a whole person can become invisible to our caregivers. And, when this happens, we feel somehow diminished and unseen, a frame of mind that can have detrimental effects on our healing and recovery. Overview For this discussion, watch the HBO production of the Off-Broadway play, Wit.Links to an external site. https://fod-infobase-com.vlib.excelsior.edu/p_ViewVideo.aspx?xtid=210857 Notice one of the ironic aspects of Vivian’s story is that her attending physician, Dr. Posner, a young man, was once her student. Vivian’s graduate training was as strict and regimented as Dr. Posner’s medical training, and as a professor, she could be cold and unforgiving with her students. Dr. Posner is fascinated by Vivian’s disease and treatment of cancer but knows very little about how to give genuine, compassionate care. Also take note of the contrasting care provided by the nurse, Susan Monchan. QUESTION: For the initial post, explain the irony of this situation in more detail and depth. Consider the following questions as you write your response: 1.How does Dr. Posner’s behavior toward Vivian, his patient, reflect or mimic Vivian’s attitude toward her students when she was a professor? 2.In what ways is Vivian’s teaching style similar to Dr. Posner’s bedside manner? In contrast, examine the actions of Susan Monchan. The nurse didn’t receive the same education as Dr. Posner, but she has skills that he lacks. 3.What qualities and life skills does nurse Monchan possess that the doctor does not? Refer to specific examples from the play in your response. The initial post should be at least 250 word. Be sure to include at least 3 references to the assigned readings, concepts, and themes from the module.
