M3.3 Discussion: When the Patient Becomes Invisible MARK GRADOS reply2 The irony of the whole situation is that Dr. Jason Posner was once a student of Vivian Bearing, and is now treating her as his patient, but he is giving her the same cold, analytical detachment that she would show to her own students. For example, when in class a student asked for an extension and she quickly responded with “Don’t tell me, your grandmother died” (Wit, 2001). This type of behavior is now reflected in Dr. Posner. It is reflected in his bedside manner, when Dr. Posner and Vivian are talking he says “Cancer is…” and Vivian responds with “Awesome?” and he promptly responds with “Yeah. It is awesome” (Wit, 2001) This appears to be a rather insensitive comment to say to a cancer patient. But this cold, and rigid approach has been taught to Dr. Posner by Vivian practically making his bedside manner nonexistent which makes Vivian seem like a case study rather than a real patient. On the other hand, nurse Susan Monahan has life skills and qualities that Dr. Posner does nat, that being that she is a compassionate and caring person. When Vivian is crying and talking about how much it hurts, Susie grabs her hand and repeatedly says “It’s all right. It’s okay” (Wit, 2001) to comfort Vivian as much as possible as she knows she is going through a really tough experience. This compassion is completely absent with Dr. Posner so this change in interaction is a great relief for Vivian and makes her feel cared for. Susie also tries to relieve her by getting her a popsicle right after the previously mentioned interaction and as she walks off Vivian talks about why the popsicle would help medically because she knows that Susie just did it as an act of kindness to make her feel better. QUESTION: Response to Classmates After making your discussion post, read through the postings of your peers. Choose one of your peers’ posts to respond to. The posts you choose to respond to do not necessarily have to be classmates’ initial posts. Each response to a peer should be (at least) approximately 100 word in length and should contribute to the discussion in progress. All responses to classmates should be substantive. That is, they should go beyond simple agreement or disagreement with classmates’ posts.
