The ethical obligations of the health information management professional include the safeguarding of privacy and security of health information if the patients; appropriate disclosure of the health; development, use, and maintenance of health information systems; and ensuring the accessibility and integrity of health information (AHIMA,n.d). The sole purpose of ethical code is to ensure high standards of practices, guidance on decision making and patient well-being and accountability. The nurse in this scenario faced several ethical challenges, including patient confidentiality breaches, the duty to protect and respect patients’ privacy. Ethics are essential to the integrity of the nursing profession as it helps ensure better patient care. Nursing is a highly fast-paced job with new challenges arising daily and nurse managers across the country all dealing with similar ethical dilemmas (Avant, 2021). I believe the principle that was violated was non-maleficience. This principle talk about avoiding harm to our patient in any means that may take place. In this case patient privacy and health records were exposed and someone could’ve charted incorrectly in his assessment causing alarm for the providers, also information between patient could have been mix up. Assuring patient safety in all counts and situations is the number one priority as a nurse, since we are the first line of defense patient has while in our care. In this case I will handle my practice differently. I will ensure that employee is aware of the importance of keeping patient chart confidential and that if away from a computer they should always logout. Use this moment for reflecting on the simple mistakes that can cause bigger issues. I will provide learning modules to ensure proper education is available for the nurses. I will also use this incident to teach everyone that our responsibility needs to be taken seriously and that violating patient privacy is not tolerated. The thing I would have done differently is logout of the computer from the beginning since at the end of the day the nurse that is signed in will be held responsible for every action taken. Even when we are busy in the unit which happens often, we have a responsibility not only to the patients but to ourselves, since working hard for our license can be easily be lost by one simple mistake.
