Original Question
RESPOND TO THE DISCUSSION BOARD FOLLOWING THE QUESTIONS BELOW: Which primary issue do you identify as the main concern in this situation, considering the role of the key stakeholder and their impact on your client’s treatment? How do the appropriate standards in the ethical code address the challenges presented in this scenario? What potential solutions can you brainstorm to maintain integrity in handling this situation, and how do these solutions align with the ethical code’s guidance? Ask at least one thoughtful follow-up question. Measuring in Temporal Dimensions In the given scenario, a few ethical concerns emerged when reading the details of the case. Ethical risks relating to boundaries and dual relationships, and remaining professional.Dual relationships are when the parent sees the BCBA more so as a friend than a professionalism (Bailey and Burch, 2022). The main concern is that the mom is spending a great amount of time talking about personal matters and taking over the ABA session. This can be difficult to navigate while remaining empathetic and professional which is important to maintain a stable environment for the client. The Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (BACB, 2022) states that behavior analysts should refrain from engaging in multiple relationships due to the risk of harm or impaired judgement in section standard 1.06(d). Standard 2.06(a) states that behavior analysts must prioritize the client’s best interest. In this situation, both of these codes are shown to be violated, and the BCBA stated feeling uncomfortable about the situation. A possible approach the BCBA could take would be to approach the situation with an open mind and an empathetic attitude. In efforts to behave with integrity, the BCBA could say “I love that our conversations have been helping you, but they are out of my scope of practice and I think you would be better off reaching out to someone who is better equipped to give you the advice you deserve. I am more equipped to work with your daughter, and love doing so and am appreciative of how welcoming you have been. Please let me know if I can provide any referrals for you.” This way, a boundary of remaining professional and eliminating the personal conversations are set while also remaining empathetic. Based on my results from the personality quiz, I feel as though I would also have a difficult time navigating this situation. While I would also feel uncomfortable, I would also feel as if I am wrong in asking the parent to not talk to me about their personal issues. I would say something, but I would more than likely reach out to my BCBA of how best to navigate this, since it is a common issue that occurs.
