An electrocardiogram is a simple diagnostic test to determine the function of the heart (John Hopkins Medicine, 2025). This evaluation includes placing electrodes that detect the electrical impulses from the heart on various locations of the body. ECGs can help diagnose heart issues, assess how well a pacemaker or medication is working, and establish a baseline to compare to future data. When reading the results of an electrocardiogram, one must be able to identify the different shapes or “waves” of the lines. These waves represent different electrical impulses in various areas of the heart.
