Original Question
Case study Providing Care to a Client with an Intellectual Disability Background Peter Krall is a 28-year-old man with a moderate intellectual disability. He was admitted to the Ottawa Hospital for a scheduled surgery to remove his tonsils and adenoids due to recurrent infections. Peter lives in a group home for individuals with intellectual disabilities and has limited verbal communication abilities. He relies on simple gestures, non-verbal cues, and a few basic words to express herself. When Peter becomes anxious or fearful, he becomes agitated, often resulting in responsive behaviors. Medically, he often suffers from asthma exacerbations and upper respiratory infections. Concerns Peter’s verbal communication is limited to a few basic words, such as “yes,” “no,” and “pain,” making it challenging for the healthcare team to understand his needs and concerns. This often results in healthcare providers addressing his caregiver when asking questions. Peter primarily relies on non-verbal cues such as pointing, facial expressions, and body language to convey his thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately, healthcare providers often misinterpret his cues or miss important information. Peter often experiences anxiety and fear when in unfamiliar medical settings, which can further hinder effective communication. His anxiety manifests as increased agitation and restlessness, potentially leading to responsive behaviours. Finally, Peter is accustomed to receiving care from his group home staff, who are familiar with his communication style and needs; as a result, he may become frustrated or resistant when interacting with unfamiliar healthcare providers. Using the case study associated with the group presentation topic you selected at the beginning of the semester, please write a reflection paper addressing the issues described in said case study. Please reflect on the following questions: What are the barriers to client centred care for the patient depicted in the case study? How do Canadian cultural assumptions and biases contribute to these barriers? Are there institutional barriers that impede client centred care? After considering what might constitute barriers to client centred care, briefly discuss how these barriers might be overcome. When discussing how to overcome barriers to client centred care, be sure to focus on communication strategies discussed in class and depicted in the Bevel Up documentary. In addition, I expect your analysis to be informed by both Watson’s and Swanson’s theoretical models. Be sure to write with economy and precision. Edit your work as I expect a well written document free of all spelling, grammar and format errors. This assignment must be grounded in research. Even if you express your own ideas, I expect those ideas to be supported by academic research. For information regarding how this assignment will be evaluated for style, grammar, mechanics, organization and structure, please refer to the Evaluation Standards document in the Table of Contents. Please do not regurgitate definitions from Swanson’s and Watson’s care models; instead, I expect to see a practical application of the models to the case study. I want to study for case as a practical student
