Brittney is the Director of Emergency Services who oversees the day-to-day operations and budgets for my department. The organization is a for-profit community hospital in central Virginia that serves several counties, with an emergency department (ED) that serves 65,000+ people annually (Brittney Dillard, B..y@hcahealthcare.com, April 9, 2025). According to Brittney, standardized bedside report is already a policy in place, but the policy is poorly enforced without current tactics to evaluate outcomes due to resource constraints. This is a concern because a strong evidence base requires a formal evaluation of effectiveness (El-Awady, 2023). The interviewee presented a transformational leadership style her answers suggested I take action and get more involved with shared governance with other decision-makers to implement my suggested changes. Our facility offers shared governance, town hall, and unit-based councils where employees can contribute to the improvement of the facility through DEI efforts and employee satisfaction. Both contribute to improved patient care through structural empowerment (Kusumawardan & Wahyuni, 2024). Reflection Improved patient care is the overall goal of leadership in nursing. The SWOT analysis, interview, and feedback refined my view of our organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The interview gave insight that policies may already be in place, but there are also barriers in place that prevent successful implementation and evaluation. This communication and understanding allows for the improvement and refining of goals and strategies. The interview also shed light on different leadership styles and how they apply to a SWOT analysis. Laissez-faire leadership styles may be considered a strength or a weakness. It is a very hands-off style that provides resources but little input in the outcome (Specchia et al., 2021). This may work well in certain situations, but this style does not contribute to the success of improvement planning. Transformational leadership would be more appropriate for QI, as it fosters collaboration and innovation (Specchia et al., 2021). Examples of transformational leadership include shared governance and DEI practices. Fostering communication among staff and promoting diversity are opportunities for improved patient care and a more positive working environment (Yoder-Wise & Sportsman, 2023). Nurse leaders have an ethical responsibility to create a culture of safety in healthcare. To promote ethical practices, nurse leaders should serve as role models for their teams. This includes promoting safety, inclusion, and support (Storaker et al., 2022). According to the Office of Minority Health (2021), African American and Latino patients have a higher association with chronic health conditions and receive lower-quality healthcare. Programs such as DEI initiatives are an example of a way to provide culturally competent care and promote the feeling of safety in the workplace (Buh et al., 2024). Another ethical responsibility is to prepare staff with quality training and development strategies using evidence-based practice to enhance structural empowerment and improve patient outcomes (Kusumawardan & Wahyuni, 2024).
