Original Question
Add a response to this 2 paragraphs at least 5-6 questions and ask a question at the end of each one. 1. Approximately 11.7 million adults are living with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the United States. COPD sufferers die from respiratory problems, but other complications could contribute to death such as pneumonia which is a pulmonary infection, heart failure, pulmonary embolism (blood clot), or cardiovascular diseases. Two main COPD diseases are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis is a type of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema is when your airway and lungs have severe damage due to long term cigarette smoking. Air sacs in the lungs are stretchy and elastic so when you breathe in the air sacs fill up with air and when you breathe out they deflate. This causes the air sacs to lose its shape which makes it hard for the lungs to move oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the body. Chronic bronchitis is irritation and swelling (inflammation) of the bronchial tubes. Bronchial tubes carry air to and from the lung sacs. When the tubes are irritated it makes it harder for the lungs to move carbon dioxide out your body and oxygen in your lungs. Symptoms of emphysema and chronic bronchitis are frequent wheezing and cough with mucus production, shortness of breath, and tightness in chest. People at risk for emphysema and chronic bronchitis are those who smoke or use to smoke, age 40 years and older, family history and genetics that includes alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (mainly in chronic bronchitis), and long term exposure to lung irritants such as chemicals, dust, or air pollution. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, or medications such as bronchodilators are used to treat emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Surgery would be the last option for people who have severe symptoms that do not get better with medications. 2. The most recent data from the CDC shows that as of 2023, approximately 16 million or 4.3% of U.S. adults suffered from COPD (CDC, 2023). Even though COPD is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., patients who suffer from COPD do not die from COPD itself but with other medical complications along with COPD, such as ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, and lung cancers (CDC, 2023). According to the CDC, the most common types of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis (CDC, 2023). Chronic bronchitis is a condition where the bronchial tubes are inflamed and produce a persistent cough and sputum for more than 3 months in two consecutive years (NIH, n.d.). The inflamed bronchial tubes narrow and obstruct the airway, making it difficult to breathe. Emphysema, on the other hand, causes the alveoli to lose their elasticity. Stiffened alveoli interfere with efficient oxygen and other gas exchanges, which causes SOB and reduced lung function down the road. Emphysema also affects the number of alveoli because the breakdown of alveolar walls reduces the total number of alveoli, reducing the total surface area for gas exchange (CDC, 2023). In this week’s episode, “Doing My Part”, Mr. Jones was previously diagnosed with lung cancer and still did not quit smoking, which led to COPD. He had more labored breathing than at his previous visit and also had worsening dyspnea, coughing, and sputum production. Based on his symptoms, Mr. Jones is likely having chronic bronchitis rather than emphysema because of his severe coughing and sputum production (WCU, n.d.).
