From information the below: Hello classmates: The problem I wish to discuss is how to address black maternal health issues better. This problem is more complex and has been historically neglected, but has been something I’ve seen working in health care in the 1990s and now. This also affects me personally, because my late cousin’s mother died while giving birth to his late brother. What are the details of the problem? Black women have had difficulty having their maternal health issues addressed, which stems from medical professionals discriminating against black mothers. Who is impacted by the problem? Black mothers in the United States are affected by this problem, as recent statistics show that black mothers are two times more likely to experience pregnancy-related death compared to white women. While maternity mortality rates have decreased, they’ve only decreased for every other race except black women. When did this problem begin, and when could it reasonably be resolved? This problem has its roots in early slavery, when enslaved Black women were forced to reproduce even after instances of rape and abuse, which caused emotional and physical trauma and poor health. Because of segregation practices, black women were unable to receive adequate care for themselves or their babies. Even in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, there was unethical experimentation on black mothers done without their consent. While there have been a few positive strides to address the needs of black mothers properly, this issue has not been fully resolved. Where is this problem taking place? This is a problem that affects black women in the United States. According to the National Vital Statistics System, a component of the Centers for Disease Control, for black women in 2022, there were 49.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, and in 2023, there were 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births. Why is this problem important? This problem is crucial because, for far too long, black women’s health has been ignored or dismissed due to inadequate healthcare initiatives. Thus, Black Maternal Health Awareness Week was founded by The Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), which runs from 4/11- 17 and is part of National Minority Health Month, observed every April. This past week’s theme was healing legacies. The BMMA spent the week addressing how oppression, racial discrimination in health care, and reproductive injustice have affected the way black women’s health and well-being have been treated in the American healthcare system. With the current administration looking to cut funding for Medicaid, WIC, and SNAP, among other crucial benefits designated to help mothers, black women are now faced with a reality in which they may not receive the healthcare afforded others, especially when it comes to the well-being of their child. As someone who does not have children myself but is planning to adopt in the next 18 months, this does affect me, because I would want my child to have the best healthcare needed, and I would also want that same thing for myself, as I am my advocate at the end of the day. How could you potentially or partially address or resolve this problem? I believe that coalitions and organizations such as BMMA that are devoted to helping black women and their children have the best healthcare necessary is an excellent start to addressing these inequities amongst black women and making sure that the providers that they see are giving them the best care and information needed, rather than dismissing their issues.
