Social workers would want to be sensitive to any shame their clients might experience. In this case, the client is expressing shame about her inability to read the plan. The social worker joins with the client and offers to help her by arranging a meeting that will include the child welfare worker and will ensure that all of them have a shared understanding of the service plan. I mean, if it helps with Eric, fine. I think it will help because all of us together will know what the expectations are. You and I will be very clear about what they are expecting you to do. With your permission, I’d be happy to call your worker and arrange for a meeting and then let you know when that meeting is. Yeah. That would be good. I mean, can I bring my sponsor? Because I think she’d be happy to know that I’m back on track. Of course, she’d be more than welcome. In asking to bring her sponsor, the client may be saying that she wants to be sure that there is someone in the room who is on her side. And by responding affirmatively to the suggestion, the social worker helps her feel empowered by welcoming someone whom she experiences as a support. In this way, the worker is reinforcing the client’s resourcefulness and strength. OK. I’ll call her tonight and let her know.
