Thalidomide also has an immunomodulatory factor that works by reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. This effect makes the drug very useful in treating certain inflammatory conditions. Because of its well known teratogenic effects there are strict regulations of this medication, specifically for women of child bearing age.
