Respond to this post:What motivated me to become a nurse was my grandma. When I was about 13-14 years of age she went through a change of condition that all of my family members did not think would be the last moment of my grandma. She began to have a hard time breathing and was hospitalized. The way the doctor explained it to my family was that she was practically drowning in her lungs. Without anyone in the family having medical experience besides CAN no one really understood was what going on. Our experience at this facility was also very not great. The nurses were terrible and very not empathetic to our family’s situation since there was a lot of us there everyday to make sure my grandma knew we wanted her to get better. Eventually, my grandmas condition worsened and she needed to be intubated and us having no idea why. Once intubated her condition worsened even more and the doctor admitted that the tubing messed up her throat and lungs making it a point of no return. She was dying. Becoming the first RN in my family meant a lot to me because at least I was able to understand terminology my loved ones are experiencing if they need further clarification or support. Being able to understand why certain things are being done and why is a must for me in patient teaching and for my own family as well.
